What is Commercial Diving and its Importance?

At The Ocean Corporation, we invite you to explore the exhilarating and pivotal realm of commercial diving. This specialized field goes beyond the depths of traditional diving, playing a crucial role in various underwater operations essential to global industries. The Ocean Corporation’s comprehensive Commercial Diving program is thirty (30) weeks long.

Class Schedule


Classes are held Monday through Friday, either 7:30 am to 12:30 pm or 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

This section of our training program lays the foundation for a successful career in commercial diving. This comprehensive module series is meticulously designed to equip students with essential skills in rigging, diving physics, equipment maintenance, and diving emergency procedures. Participants will learn everything from the basics of handling and maintaining diving gear and marine equipment to advanced techniques in air decompression and chamber operations. With a strong emphasis on safety and practical application, our courses ensure that students are not only knowledgeable but also adept at managing real-world diving scenarios efficiently and effectively. This robust training prepares graduates to meet the demanding challenges of commercial diving with confidence and competence.

Rigging

Students master the essentials of handling and maintaining various types of wire and rope and learn to tie crucial knots and splice lines. The course also teaches safe crane operation and the use of key rigging tools like block and tackle and fairleads, integral to commercial diving. Practical training empowers students to safely maneuver heavy loads and prepare diving equipment for deployment, ensuring they are job-ready for demanding commercial operations.

Basic Diving Physics and Medicine

Students learn fundamental diving physics and physiology, including gas laws and preventive measures for diving-related medical conditions.

Air Decompression and Chamber Orientation

Instruction on using U.S. Navy Standard Surface Air Decompression Tables and practical experience with decompression chambers.

Diving Air and Chamber Systems

Covers the operation and maintenance of air supply systems and decompression chambers essential for safe diving operations.

Dive Equipment Maintenance

This course focuses on the upkeep and functional understanding of diving masks, helmets, and complete dive stations.

Marine Equipment Maintenance

Skills in maintaining and troubleshooting key marine equipment critical to commercial diving operations.

Emergency Procedures

Comprehensive training in handling diving emergencies, diver rescue procedures, out-of-air scenarios, and loss of communications scenarios, including first aid, CPR, and the operation of emergency air systems.

Advanced Diving Skills

This section of the program is designed to elevate the capabilities of aspiring commercial divers with specialized, advanced training. This segment delves into more complex and technically demanding aspects of diving, crucial for those aiming to tackle challenging underwater projects in varied and extreme environments. Students will explore the nuances of Advanced Mixed-Gas Diving, which focuses on the extended reach and increased safety measures necessary for deep-water expeditions. The curriculum also covers Bell and Saturation Diving, where divers learn the intricacies of prolonged deep-sea diving operations, including the use of bell diving systems and saturation techniques. Additionally, the Underwater Welding and Underwater Cutting module equips students with essential skills for performing critical underwater construction and repair tasks, emphasizing adherence to safety protocols and industry standards. Underwater Welding and Cutting

Provides practical skills in both dry welding and wet welding techniques, with an emphasis on safety, welding procedures, and industry standards. Students have the opportunity to earn underwater welding certifications in accordance with AWS D3.6M.

This section of the program focuses on equipping students with essential nondestructive testing (NDT) skills necessary for expert assessment and maintenance of various materials and structures. This training includes detailed courses in Magnetic Particle (MT) and Ultrasonic (UT) Inspection Techniques, where students learn to perform basic and advanced inspections. These modules are designed to identify defects in a range of materials, enhancing students’ capabilities in quality control and safety assurance. Additionally, the Nondestructive Testing (NDT) Lab provides hands-on experience in underwater inspection techniques, allowing students to practice and master the evaluation of the structural integrity of submerged structures. This part of the curriculum includes Commercial and Open Water Project Dives, where students apply their cumulative diving skills in both controlled and natural aquatic settings, emphasizing adherence to operational and safety procedures. Additionally, training in Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HazWOpER) equips students with the necessary skills to safely handle hazardous materials, dive in contaminated environments, navigate confined spaces, and effectively respond to emergency scenarios.
